Anne Hutchinson is convicted of heresy and sedition in Cambridge.
November 8, 1637
[11/2-MGC, 11/7-BGL] Hutchinson was tried initially at the First Church in Boston, after complaints against her were brought by various people, including her neighbor John Winthrop, who faulted her for “[Holding meetings] not tolerable or comely in the sight of God nor fitting for your sex.” After the General Court finds her guilty at the Meeting House in Cambridge, Hutchinson warns her accusers, “I know that for this you go about to do to me, God will ruin you and your posterity, and this whole state!” Before being expelled from the colony, Hutchinson is placed under house arrest with Rev. Joseph Weld in Roxbury, then tried again in 1638.*
